PHP4 Coming to and end: What you need to know.
As of 12/31/2007 the PHP development team has said there will be no new releases of PHP 4.4. Though they will continue to make critical security fixes available until 8/8/2008.
After August 8th, 2008 PHP 4 will be no more and web hosts will start upgrading all their PHP 4 servers to PHP 5.
What will this mean for you?
Well, if all you have is a static (plain HTML) website then probably nothing. For others that are using non-PHP 5 compatible versions of e-commerce shopping cart platforms such as X-Cart, OSCommerce, etc., your site will not work after the upgrade is completed.
In order to continue running your website you will need to have the software upgraded to their latest versions that are compatible with PHP 5. In the case of X-Cart, that would be any version from 4.1.x and newer.
In X-Cart, to check your version number, login to the administration console and click on "Summary" in the administration menu. Scroll down to find the version number. Anything below 4.1.x will need to be upgraded in order to work after the PHP 5 upgrade.
What you can do now..
NetVision, Inc. is the preferred X-Cart upgrade partner for Hands-On Web Hosting and will be accepting X-Cart upgrades on a first in first out basis starting with our current customers. Once we have upgraded our current customers websites we will then start to work on additional upgrades that have been referred to us by other companies.
To put your name on our list and reserve your spot for an upgrade please click here to use our upgrade request form.
Once we receive your request we will accommodate your needs in the order the request was received.
Should the situation arise where we cannot complete your upgrade by the time your host upgrades it's servers to PHP 5, you will need to place a request with your host to be placed on a temporary PHP 4 dedicated server. Please note, allowing this action is at the discretion of your web host. Not all web hosts will be willing to accommodate you on this. Should your host not accommodate you, we highly recommend you visit Hands-On Web Hosting and put in a request with them.
